The most exciting music-related news I got today, after returning from most of a week in the woods, was that
Greg Dulli (Afghan Whigs, Twilight Singers) is embarking on his first solo tour.
Called "An Evening With Greg Dulli," this 29-show tour (
dates) will debut some new Twilight Singers songs and have a stripped-down band of Twilight Singers' guitarist Dave Rosser and multi-instrumentalist Rick Nelson (Polyphonic Spree).
After years of loving the Afghan Whigs, I finally got to see Dulli do his things when I was given some free tickets to see the Gutter Twins a couple years ago. Dulli looked and acted as if he were a member of the Rat Pack, filling some with joy and amusement and others with disgust.
He's infamous for being a total asshole. Most every song he's ever written is about it and, though it goes against my strong feminist principles, the character that is Greg Dulli has always amused and astounded me.
The one thing you can be sure to get on this tour is a smorgasbord of remarkable covers. Like Nina Simone, he has a way of interpreting songs and making them totally his own. From The Supremes to TLC, Sam Cooke to Teenage Fanclub, Kate Bush to Hole, he has a way of taking songs and bringing out their latent dark side.
